For the first concert of our forty-third season we are featuring the composer we honour in the name of our choir – J.S Bach. In addition to his Magnificat in D we are also performing his Cantata No 191 Gloria in excelsis, Deo,which he subsequently used for his great B Minor Mass. Bach enthusiasts will recognise it immediately; although, there are subtle differences which have made it an exciting work to rehearse. We are also performing Vivaldi’s Gloria, perhaps even better known than the Bach works, to the extent that it has become a piece that could be said to be somewhat hackneyed. Sadly, over-familiarity has made it a work which many amateur choirs perform badly. We do not intend to fall into that trap! It is also the first concert in which we are joining forces with the Kingfisher Sinfonietta, an orchestra rapidly building an excellent reputation in the region led by Beth Spendlove, also performing the Mendelssohn String Symphony No.1 in the concert as well. Together, we are celebrating the glory of baroque music. Do come and join us!
