On Saturday 10th March 2018 Eye Bach Choir’s concert features works by two very different composers under the single word Gloria! It opens with the motet of that name by the Frenchman Francis Poulenc written in 1960/1 very near the end of his life, followed by a full Mass Messe di Gloria by the Italian Giacomo Puccini composed at the age of only eighteen in 1880 at the very beginning of his musical career. Both works are full of expressive melody immediately recognisable as being from the pen of each man. Given what came after his Messe di Gloria one might expect a mass by Puccini to be operatic in style and indeed it is, but Poulenc is equally sweeping and grand in expressing his musical ideas. Neither composer makes any attempt to defer to religiosity but focuses on drama, excitement and fun. It is impossible to think of either work being performed in a liturgical setting.
Together they make an exciting and entertaining concert to be held in Eye Parish Church at 7.30pm. This programme also demonstrates the range and scope of the Eye Bach Choir and its conductor, coming after an exclusively Baroque concert given last November. Whilst the Poulenc will be accompanied by the superb Binns organ in Eye Church, the Puccini will feature a full orchestral accompaniment from the Kingfisher Sinfonietta. The soloists are Lisa Cassidy, Soprano, and Paul Smy, Tenor. Do come and enjoy a splendid concert!
